Geothermal Packing Reinforced & Injectable Graphite

Used in Geothermal projects and Power plants around the world, SG630 is a steam service injection packing. Upon request from a Hawaiian utility looking for packings that exceeded 650 degrees, our SG-630 injectable packing was used with our LCP packing sets on the slopes of an active Volcano. Our packing along with our LCP packing sets are still in use today!

Volcano Case Study

Several years ago we received a call from a company operating a number of rising stem gate valves in geothermal service. They had been using glass filled polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) packing with success previously, but since they were on the slopes of an ACTIVE VOLCANO which had a recent eruption, the operating temperature of the steam had risen to the point that the PTFE packing was flowing through the extrusion gaps and failing to seal. They asked if we had anything for use at 650 degree F. and above.

We provided stem packing sets made from Jim Ray LCP material, a composite of stainless steel and expanded graphite, molded into vee packing sets. We also provided our SG-630 injection packing to energize the vee packing sets.

The vee packing sets were custom designed to fit the customer’s valve glands, manufactured and delivered on time. The packing sets were installed and placed into service with no problems. The packing sets are STILL IN SERVICE!
